This is a video I found of what life was like in Belgium in 1991. Belgium is a small country of just over 12 million people. It's the home of the EU and NATO. And it's had more than its fair share of financial, political, and social difficulties over the years. But whatever else it may be, Belgium is also an amazing example of multiculturalism at large: with Dutch-speaking Flemings in the north and French-speaking Walloons in the south, you'll find immigrants from around 60 different countries making their way here — including many Muslims who have come to Belgium as a direct result of our involvement in World War II and subsequent colonial struggles around Africa and Asia. I'm not sure how this video found its way to me. But I'm glad it did. It's shockingly honest, which is exactly what education about sexuality should be. Here are some of the highlights: Just one example of our teacher's candor. The first thing she wants you to know is that no matter what you've heard, it's possible to be pregnant without having sex. Sometimes, women simply forget to replace the cap on the pill bottle before taking their first pill, or they might take it too late in their menstrual cycle to prevent ovulation. She goes on to describe the average life expectancy of a Belgian woman in 1991, and how hard it is to get pregnant when you're in your late 40s. This is truly a war zone. The narrator illustrates the diversity of Belgium with a slide show of graffiti, "Viva la Muerta" ("Hail to the Dead") painted on walls, and a picture of a body with a knife sticking out of it. Near the end, she reminds us that today there can be more than one partner for each sex. Belgium has become a haven for terrorists seeking haven from other parts of Europe or from their own countries. (Many of them are of course Muslim.) She tells us about the measures that have been taken to protect ourselves, and how police work is really not that different than it was in World War II. Throughout the video, teachers can be heard saying things like "It's up to you to decide if contraception is okay for you" and "These are just my personal opinions." But if you'd like some hard facts, here they are: The following issues were covered in the video: Belgium was ranked sixth in 2009 United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index (HDI). Belgium was ranked fourth out of all countries in the Western Europe region. cfa1e77820
